Getting married at Christ the Redeemer, with the party at our estate

The vows at the foot of the statue, with Rio below you; then the celebration in our garden. We plan the ceremony with the Sanctuary’s rules in mind and run the whole weekend around it. From US$ 21,000 as an add-on to our three-day package.

The Sanctuary’s rules

How a wedding at Christ the Redeemer works

The statue stands in a Catholic sanctuary, and the Sanctuary sets the rules for every wedding held there. These are the ones it publishes; read them before you fall in love with the idea.

  • A Catholic ceremony

The Sanctuary follows the norms of the Catholic Church, and at least one of you must be Catholic. You also need the certificate of a pre-marriage course, which you can take at a parish near your home.

  • Three places on the summit

Inside the chapel, in front of the chapel, or in front of the monument itself. Some formats allow the ceremony before or after the hours open to visitors.

  • Book 3 to 18 months ahead

Requests are accepted from 18 months to 3 months before the date. There are no weddings on holy days such as Holy Week, the feast of Our Lady Aparecida, Christmas and New Year.

  • Officiant and music

A priest or deacon designated by the Sanctuary leads the ceremony; your own priest can, if the Sanctuary approves him in advance. Only sacred or classical music is allowed.

  • A civil effect, if you want it

The Sanctuary offers a religious wedding with civil effect, where the celebrant performs both at once. For couples from abroad, the legal side has its own steps — see our guide below.

  • Requested through the Sanctuary

The request is made only through the Sanctuary’s own website, and a date is held only once availability is confirmed. We prepare it with you and plan the rest of the weekend around it.

Ceremonies on the summit

  • The groom kissing the bride’s hand on the white staircase below the Christ the Redeemer statue, both sides lined with white roses and baby’s breath, under a clear blue sky.
  • The groom kissing the bride on the cheek on the summit terrace at dusk, her lace veil over her shoulders, Sugarloaf Mountain and the bay behind them under an orange sky.
  • A bride and groom embracing on the balustraded terrace below the statue, her long lace veil spread on the floor, Sugarloaf Mountain and the bay behind them at dawn.
  • A white aisle lined with baby’s breath on the terrace at sunrise, the bride and groom at the altar at the far end, guests on both sides under an orange sky.
  • The newlyweds walking back down the flower-lined aisle on the terrace, the bride raising her bouquet, guests applauding behind them.

After the vows

Then the party, in our garden

A ceremony on the summit is short and intimate. The celebration needs room: you and your guests come down from Corcovado to Além do Sonho, a garden estate of Atlantic Forest on the west side of Rio, where the party goes on into the night.

The ceremony is an add-on to our three-day wedding package — welcome drinks, the wedding party and an after party, with planning and an English-speaking planner and coordinator at every event. The package is from US$ 40,000 (60 guests); the ceremony at Christ the Redeemer is from US$ 21,000, including transport to the summit, quoted separately for your date.

Who plans it: our team for couples coming from abroad

  • A bride and groom embracing on the lawn of the estate, her long veil and train spread across the grass, a wall of tall tropical trees behind them.
  • Dozens of lit natural-fibre lanterns hanging from the thatched roof of the entrance, between walls of green planting, with the pool lit blue beyond.

Two other ceremonies

If neither of you is Catholic

The ceremony can take place in our garden, among the palms, or in a private garden on the edge of Grumari beach, a short drive from the estate. The party afterwards is the same.

Questions about a Christ the Redeemer wedding

How much does it cost to get married at Christ the Redeemer?

With us, the ceremony at Christ the Redeemer is an add-on to our three-day wedding package, from US$ 21,000 including transport to the summit, quoted separately for your date. The package itself — welcome drinks, the wedding party at our estate and an after party — is from US$ 40,000 (60 guests). The Sanctuary does not publish its own fees on its website.

Can non-Catholics get married at Christ the Redeemer?

The Sanctuary follows the norms of the Catholic Church and asks that at least one of the couple be Catholic. If neither of you is, the ceremony can take place in our garden or in a private garden at Grumari beach, with the same party afterwards.

How far in advance do we need to book?

The Sanctuary accepts requests from 18 months to 3 months before the date, and confirms the date only after checking availability. For a destination wedding we suggest starting about a year ahead, so your guests have time for flights and, for some passports, a visa.

Is a wedding at Christ the Redeemer legally valid?

The Sanctuary offers a religious wedding with civil effect in Brazil. Whether and how it is recognised in your home country is a separate step, and many couples from abroad marry legally at home and hold the ceremony here.

Where does the party happen after the ceremony?

At Além do Sonho, our garden estate in Ilha de Guaratiba, on the west side of Rio de Janeiro. The couple and the guests come down from the summit and the celebration continues on the estate, with transfers planned by our team.
